Pope Leo XIV Names Archbishop Wachowski Nuncio to Iraq

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Polish-born Vatican diplomat Mirosław Stanisław Wachowski as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq, elevating him to the rank of archbishop.

Archbishop Mirosław Wachowski, who had been serving as Undersecretary for Relations with States since 2019, was named Apostolic Nuncio to Iraq by Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, 18 September. At the same time, the Holy Father assigned him the Titular See of Villamagna in Proconsolare, with the rank of archbishop.

The announcement was made by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, in the presence of the three sections of the Secretariat of State.

 

Biography

Archbishop Wachowski was born on 8 May 1970 in Pisz, Poland. He was ordained a priest on 15 June 1996 for the Diocese of Ełk, after completing his priestly studies. He later obtained a degree in Canon Law.

On 1 July 2004, he entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See. His service has included postings in the Apostolic Nunciature in Senegal, at the Permanent Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and the United Nations Office and Specialized Institutions in Vienna. He also served at the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland and in the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State.

Pope Francis appointed him Undersecretary for Relations with States on 24 October 2019, a role in which he has worked extensively in the Holy See’s diplomatic engagement at the international level.

Archbishop Wachowski is multilingual, speaking Italian, English, French, Spanish, and Russian.
