CATHOLIC HIERARCHY UPDATE: Appointed: Bishop Mark S. Rivituso, Archibishop (Archdiocese of Mobile, Alabama). July 1, 2025
The winds of change are stirring in the Archdiocese of Mobile, Alabama, as Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Mark S. Rivituso as the new Archbishop. This significant move, announced on July 1, 2025, comes following the retirement of Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, who led the archdiocese with devotion and distinction for 17 years.
A Man Formed in Faith and Service
Archbishop-elect Mark Rivituso is no stranger to ecclesial leadership. Born September 20, 1961, in St. Louis, Missouri, he is the sixth of eight children in a devout Catholic family. His priestly vocation blossomed early and deeply. He was ordained on January 16, 1988, after formation at Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary.
His path as a priest was marked by pastoral care and intellectual rigor. He holds a Licentiate in Canon and Civil Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada, equipping him for both sacramental ministry and ecclesiastical administration. Over the years, he served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and became auxiliary bishop in 2017, assisting in shepherding one of the most historically Catholic regions in the U.S.
A Humble Response to a Noble Call
In his first public remarks following the appointment, Archbishop-elect Rivituso expressed deep gratitude and humility:
“I am blessed and honored to follow in the footsteps of Archbishop Rodi, a good shepherd. I entrust myself to the care of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who leads and sustains us all.”
His response is emblematic of a servant-leader rooted in prayer, humility, and hope—a man prepared to carry the torch of apostolic ministry in a dynamic and growing southern diocese.
The Legacy of Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi
Archbishop Thomas John Rodi, born March 27, 1949, in New Orleans, faithfully led Mobile since 2008. Known for his pastoral sensitivity, theological clarity, and commitment to Catholic education and evangelization, Rodi also served as Bishop of Biloxi prior to his time in Alabama. He reached the canonical retirement age of 75 in March 2024 and continued to lead the archdiocese until Pope Leo XIV accepted his resignation on July 1, 2025. He now holds the title Archbishop Emeritus and will serve as apostolic administrator until his successor is formally installed.
A New Chapter for the Church in the Deep South
The Archdiocese of Mobile, established in 1829, carries a rich Catholic heritage in a largely Protestant region. It includes over 60,000 Catholics across southern Alabama and continues to grow through migration, evangelization, and vibrant parishes. The appointment of Archbishop Rivituso is seen as a sign of continuity—one that respects tradition while embracing new challenges. His installation is expected in the coming weeks and will be presided over by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.
Looking Ahead: Pastoral Priorities
While Archbishop-elect Rivituso has yet to release his pastoral priorities for Mobile, his background in canon law, experience with parish renewal, and strong devotion to the Eucharist and Marian spirituality suggest a ministry marked by:
-
Deep catechesis and faith formation
-
Pastoral presence in rural and urban areas alike
-
Promotion of vocations and youth engagement
-
Commitment to Catholic schools and education
-
Evangelization with compassion and courage
As the Church navigates an era of cultural change, polarization, and pastoral need, the people of Mobile now welcome a shepherd who brings both canonical clarity and a pastor’s heart.
Let Us Pray
Let us join in prayer for Archbishop-elect Mark Rivituso—that his new ministry will be guided by the Holy Spirit, marked by joy in Christ, and fruitful in building up the Body of Christ in Mobile.
“I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.”
— Jeremiah 3:15
