Reflection

In today’s first reading, we witness one of the most tender and daring conversations in the Bible — Abraham interceding for Sodom. He appeals to God’s justice and mercy, bargaining down from fifty to ten righteous people to save an entire city. What courage! What compassion! Abraham reveals the heart of an intercessor — one who stands between judgment and mercy, pleading not for himself, but for others.

And yet, God listens. Patiently. Mercifully. This passage invites us to reflect: Do we have Abraham’s bold compassion for a broken world? Do we dare to plead with God for the salvation of the unworthy, the fallen, the far-off? If Abraham cared that deeply about a wicked city, how much more should we care about our families, our communities, our nation?

Psalm 103 assures us of the answer: “The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion.” We do not intercede in vain. The God who forgives, heals, redeems, and crowns us with mercy is listening still — eager to forgive, ready to restore.

But there’s another cost in today’s Gospel: the cost of following Jesus. When a scribe expresses his desire to follow Christ, Jesus responds with an unsettling truth: “Foxes have dens, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Discipleship is not a path of comfort — it is a journey of detachment, trust, and sacrifice.

Another would-be disciple hesitates, asking to bury his father first. Jesus responds: “Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.” His words are not dismissive but urgent: the Kingdom cannot wait. Delayed obedience is disobedience. To follow Jesus means putting Him first, above social norms, personal attachments, and even legitimate responsibilities.

Prayer

Lord, give me Abraham’s heart to intercede for others with boldness and love. Teach me to reflect Your mercy and to trust in Your compassion. Strengthen my resolve to follow You without delay, without excuses, and without holding back. Let me walk in true discipleship, even when it costs me comfort, certainty, or approval. Amen.

Today’s Challenge

  • Take five minutes to intercede for someone you know who is far from God.
  • Examine your life: Is there anything you’re putting ahead of following Jesus fully? Lay it at His feet today.
