Reflection

Today’s readings remind us that true discipleship is not about comfort but about carrying the cross with faith and hope.

The book of Wisdom gives us a profound assurance: “The souls of the just are in the hands of God, and no torment shall touch them.” Though they may suffer in the eyes of the world, God counts them as precious, refined like gold in the furnace. This was the reality for the Korean martyrs we honor today, who embraced death with unwavering trust in Christ.

Psalm 125 echoes the same truth: “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but stands forever.” Faith gives us a stability that no persecution, rejection, or worldly trial can overthrow.

In the Gospel, Jesus gives the radical call to discipleship: “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” This isn’t a one-time choice but a daily commitment. The world tempts us to cling to comfort, prestige, or security. Yet Jesus reminds us: gaining the whole world means nothing if we lose our soul.

The martyrs we celebrate today lived these words fully. Their witness challenges us: Are we willing to lose ourselves for Christ? Are we ready to stand firm, even when faith demands sacrifice?

The cost is great, but the crown is eternal.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You call me to deny myself and take up my cross daily. Strengthen me to follow You with courage, like the martyrs who gave their lives for love of You. May I trust that even in sacrifice, my soul rests secure in Your hands. Amen.

Today’s Challenge

Carry your cross today with patience — whether it’s a small inconvenience, a difficult person, or a hidden struggle. Offer it for someone suffering persecution for their faith.
