Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)
Readings:
Galatians 2:19–20
Psalm 127:1–5
Matthew 16:24–27
Reflection
Today’s first reading contains one of the most profound declarations of Christian identity: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Saint Paul reminds us that true discipleship is not about self-preservation but surrender. Our old self dies so that Christ may live fully within us.
Psalm 127 echoes this truth beautifully: unless the Lord builds the house, our labor is in vain. A life centered on self-effort leads to exhaustion, but a life surrendered to God bears fruit that endures.
In the Gospel, Jesus delivers the heart of discipleship: “If anyone wants to be my disciple, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” These are not words of comfort but of radical commitment. To gain the world but lose one’s soul is the greatest tragedy. True life, Jesus tells us, is found not in clinging but in giving, not in self-indulgence but in self-denial.
Today we also honor Saint Pius of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio), a man who lived this Gospel with remarkable faith. Marked with the stigmata, he bore Christ’s wounds and offered his life in prayer, sacrifice, and service. His life is a witness that union with Christ is possible when we embrace the cross with love.
This reflection invites us to ask: Am I willing to lose myself so Christ may live in me? What crosses am I being called to carry today for love of Him?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to die daily to self and live fully for You. Teach me to carry my cross with love and to trust that true life is found in surrender. May I, like Saint Padre Pio, reflect Your presence to the world.
Amen.
