Reflection
In today’s first reading, we meet Hagar, a mother cast out into the wilderness with her son, Ishmael. Their water is gone, hope is fading, and death seems near. Hagar, overwhelmed by grief, places the boy under a bush and withdraws—“I cannot watch the boy die.” Her pain is not just physical; it is deeply emotional, a cry of abandonment, injustice, and powerlessness. But then, God hears the boy’s cry and opens Hagar’s eyes to a nearby well. He provides. He was there all along.
This is the message today: God sees, God hears, and God stays—even in the wilderness of rejection, fear, and near-death moments. He provides not only survival but a future: He promises to make Ishmael a great nation.
Psalm 34 echoes this promise: “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him… Taste and see that the Lord is good!” We’re reminded that deliverance often comes quietly, in moments where fear is loud but faith is barely a whisper.
In the Gospel, Jesus confronts two men possessed by demons. Society had cast them out, chained them, and given up on them. Yet Jesus crosses into Gentile territory just for them. With divine authority, He sets them free. But the town — afraid of this power — asks Him to leave.
How often do we, like that town, fear the very deliverance we prayed for? How often do we prefer our comfort zones over the cost of Christ’s presence?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for seeing me even when I feel invisible and hearing me even when my cry is faint. Open my eyes to the wells of Your mercy in my wilderness. Drive out every fear and every force that keeps me bound. Help me not to push You away when You come to set me free.
Amen.
